RAF Bombs Diverted to Saudis for Yemen Strikes
    By Andrew Chuter 12:04 p.m. EDT July 16, 2015

LONDON — Britain is transferring Paveway IV precision guided bombs originally earmarked for the Royal Air Force to Saudi Arabia to enable the Gulf state to build stocks of the weapon being used against targets in Yemen and Syria, sources here said.

The Ministry of Defence has swapped delivery positions on the production line at Raytheon UK to ensure the Saudi Royal Air Force has weapon stocks to continue strike missions with the highly accurate 500-pound bomb.

The RAF will receive Paveway IVs coming off the production line at a later date to replace the diverted weapons, said a source familiar with the situation.

The air forces of both nations use the precision guided bomb on BAE Systems-supplied Tornado and Typhoon jets, making stocks easily interchangeable.

The Saudis have been using the weapon for strike missions against Islamic State targets and against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia and other Arab states have been bombing the Houthis since the end of March as part of an effort to reinstate Yemen's President Abd-Rabbu Mansour who has been ousted by the rebel group.

Sources in the gulf region reported during the IDEX exhibition in Abu Dhabi in February the Saudis had been the first to drop Paveway IVs in anger from its Typhoon jets when it struck an Islamic State target soon after the weapon had been cleared for service on the combat aircraft.

Redirection of the weapons to the Saudis came to light after the MoD responded to a written House of Lords question regarding the amount of assistance Britain had given the Riyadh government in its fight against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

"We are not participating directly in Saudi-led military operations in Yemen, but we are providing technical support, precision-guided weapons and exchanging information with the Saudi Arabian armed forces through pre-existing arrangements," the MoD said in its response July 14.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman declined to comment beyond the answer given to the parliamentarian.

Raytheon UK announced it had secured its first export contract for the Paveway IV in April 2014 but never named the customer.

The sale had been held up for several years after the US State Department declined to sanction the use of US components for unspecified reasons.

The deal was reckoned to be worth about £150 million (US $234.5 million). Raytheon said it involved the delivery of "hundreds of weapons" over a two-year period.

With RAF Tornados also using the weapon against Islamic State targets in Iraq, the source said discussions are underway with Raytheon for a top-up order.

Raytheon's UK and US operations developed Paveway IV for the British with the weapon going into service in 2008.

The British government subsequently placed several orders for the weapon in the wake of the NATO air campaign in Libya, where it was widely used by the RAF.

Congrats 26 years after Iraq a Patriot managed to intercept a slow and obsolete SCUD that is over 60 years old weapon. What is their Patriot PAC-3 interception ratio now compared with the Patriot in Iraq war with interception rate beneath 8%? Will they at least achieve an effective interception rate against V2 with their most modern Patriot version?

Saudi Arabia to Upgrade F-15 Fighter Jets Amid Middle East Instability

Saudi Arabia will upgrade its US-built F-15 Eagle fighter jets, defense contractor Lockheed Martin with the sensor suite that includes Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods (ATP), LANTIRN Extended Range (ER) navigation pods and Infrared Search and Track (IRST) systems.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Saudi Arabia will upgrade its US-built F-15 Eagle fighter jets, defense contractor Lockheed Martin announced in a news release on Monday amid ongoing military operations in the Middle East.

The US Air Force awarded Lockheed Martin earlier a $262.8 million contract to provide maintenance services for the navigation and targeting equipment of the Saudi F-15 fighter jets.

“The sensor suite includes Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods (ATP), LANTIRN Extended Range (ER) navigation pods and Infrared Search and Track (IRST) systems,” the release explained.

Sniper ATP is a precision targeting system chosen by the US Air Force and 21 international air forces and IRST is a passive sensor system used by international F-15 customers, Lockheed Martin said.

“LANTIRN ER pods operate day or night, providing low-level navigation with terrain-following radar on international F-15 and F-16 aircraft,” the company said.

Many countries, including the United States, Russia and France, have been conducting airstrikes against the Islamic State and other terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria.

Moreover, the United States has deployed units of F-15s in Turkey to protect Turkish air space after Ankara alleged violations of its air space by Russian aircraft combatting Islamic State forces in Syria.

In October, the US Air Force also awarded Boeing a $281.7 contract to upgrade 17 (V)3 and 29 RMP radars on its F-15 jets.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has expressed interest to purchase additional upgrades to the F-15 fighter jet systems.

The F-15 Eagle is an all-weather tactical fighter that first became operational in 1976 and is projected to be in service with the US Air Force through 2025.

Looks as if Saudi oil price spending cuts are going to hit the military bad. Spending on the population must be the priority. From bmpd via Yandex.

According to the magazine "Jane's Defence Weekly" article Craig Caffrey "Saudi Arabia announces deep defence and security spending cuts", published by the Ministry of Finance of Saudi Arabia 28 December 2015, the official parameters of the Kingdom's budget for 2016 contains data about the planned sharp reduction in Saudi spending on "defence and security" - by 30.5% in 2016.

According to the specified parameters in the 2016 budget on "defence and security" by the government of Saudi Arabia will be allocated only EUR 213.4 billion Saudi riyals (approximately 56,8 billion U.S. niesiemy rate) - against 307 billion riyals (81,9 billion) in 2015.

"French «Intelligence online» in the article «Riyad veut appater Paris avec un contrat Rafale», with reference to its sources reported that Defense Minister of Saudi Arabia and the Deputy Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman appealed to Paris with the request in the coming weeks to submit a proposal for the supply of fighter aircraft Dassault Rafale.

Saudi Arabia wants to buy 72 Rafale Multirole Fighter. The Dassault Rafale is French twin-engine, canard delta wing, multirole fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation.

France is anticipating an additional pair of export orders for its Rafale fighter, with Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates reportedly the most likely candidates. Reuters also reported Thursday that negotiations between India and France are now also discussing the possible supply of additional Rafales on top of the 36 ordered in April. Malaysia is looking to replace its MiG-29 Fulcrums, with the UAE recently restarting negotiations for the Rafale as it looks to swap out its fleet of Mirage 2000-9 fighters. The Gulf state has previously articulated a potential buy of sixty Rafales."

Saudis Want to Buy Five Corvettes in Never-Ending Middle East Arms Race

Already the leading arms importer in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia plans to purchase five new corvette warships to aid in its ongoing military campaigns.

A report, released by the military think tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), earlier this week shows that Saudi Arabia has become the largest importer of arms in the Middle East, ranking second internationally. In the last five years, it has seen weapons imports increase by 275% over the previous five year period, largely to fuel its expanding wars.

"Although concerns have been raised in arms-supplying states over Saudi air attacks in Yemen, Saudi Arabia is expected to continue to receive large numbers of major arms from those states in the next five years," the report reads.

The Saudi’s third-largest supplier is Spain, and true to SIPRI’s prediction, Riyadh is set to purchase five corvettes from Spanish state-owned shipbuilder Navantia.

While the company denies that a formal contract has been signed, sources tell IHS Jane’s that Riyadh has already approved the deal.

Worth an estimated $3.3 billion, the purchase would provide the Saudi Navy with five Avante 2200 corvettes, which feature stealth technology, one 75 mm gun, one 35 mm Naval Revolver gun system, and two mounted machine guns.

This would be Navantia’s largest export contract to date.

Riyadh’s military campaign in Yemen – a nine-month war which has killed roughly 3,000 civilians – uses a strategy that relies partly on the Saudi naval blockade, which has left roughly 1 million people displaced, and as many as 20 million in need of food, water, and medical supplies.

Saudi Arabia’s largest arms supplier is the United States, which has provided many of the cluster munitions used during Riyadh’s bombing raids. But, curiously, the kingdom turned down an offer from the US Navy earlier this year to build four Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) frigates.

The deal was reportedly scuttled because of the Saudi’s dissatisfaction with the the high pricetag and lengthy construction times for US-made vessels.

In the Spanish boats, Riyadh appears to have found a cheaper, faster alternative.

"The first Boeing AH-6i light attack/reconnaissance helicopter destined to serve the Saudi Arabia National Guard (SANG) was in the final stage of assembly this week at the manufacturer’s Mesa, Ariz. facility. Company officials expect to deliver the helicopter in July.

During a press trip Boeing hosted at its Mesa production facility, reporters viewed the firstSANG AH-6i helicopter—numbered 61001—going through the final week of the build process, prior to entering flight testing. Seven of 24 AH-6is ordered under a 2014 foreign military sale (FMS) were cycling through assembly. Fuselages for the first AH-6is manufactured for Saudi Arabia are being provided by MD Helicopters, with sub-assembly taking place in Monterrey, Mexico.

AH-6is can be fitted with a combination of Hellfire missile and rocket launchers, miniguns and machine guns. The aircraft’s integrated, digital cockpit and mission computer were derived from the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. The Defense Contract Management Agency will perform acceptance flight testing of the helicopters before turning them over to the Saudi government. It is expected that several Saudi pilots will train in Mesa, as well as pilots who will serve as instructors in Saudi Arabia.

The armed, single-engine helicopters were contained in a huge weapons deal the U.S. and Saudi Arabian governments negotiated in 2010 that included Boeing AH-64E Apache, Sikorsky UH-60M Blackhawk and MD Helicopters MD-530F helicopters. The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency specified 36 AH-6is when it notified Congress of the pending sale on October 20 that year. In August 2014, the U.S. Army awarded Boeing a $234 million FMS contract to supply 24 AH-6is to the SANG, the inaugural customer of the light attack helicopter variant. Separately, Boeing was awarded a $667 million FMS contract to supply 24 AH-64E Apaches to Qatar, the Department of Defense announced on June 7. Work on the contract is expected to be completed by May 2020."

This actually looks like geat light attack-recon helicopter for smaller countries... Somewhat like Gazelle was back in the time.

Saudi Arabia has completed the acquisition of Eurofighter Typhoon fighters

According to network sources, on June 6, 2017, BAE Systems Corporation completed the delivery of Saudi Arabia to all 72 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters ordered by this country, passing the last two aircraft (single-seat Tranche 3A fighters with Saudi onboard numbers "8023" and "8024", serial numbers CS053 And CS054, the former British military registration numbers ZK622 and ZK623 respectively). On the same day, both of these fighters flew from the aerodrome of the main aircraft building company BAE Systems in Warton (United Kingdom) to Saudi Arabia, where they arrived on June 8. Sam BAE Systems has not yet released any releases on this matter - it can be assumed that the official announcement of the completion of the supply of Eurofighter Typhoon of Saudi Arabia will be made at the opening of the air show in Le Bourget on June 19.

The use by the Saudis of the South Korean ATGM Hyeongung (Raybolt) in Yemen

The fact that this South Korean analog of Javelin ATGM went into mass production was reported last year, but it turned out that the Saudis also began to buy these ATGMs along with the South Koreans themselves and the complex received its baptism of fire in Yemen. The first video with him appeared in June, and the other day there appeared footage of his application against, as claimed, a motorcycle of husits.

Saudi Arabia has reduced the order in Canada for armored vehicles LAV 700

As reported on September 10, 2018 Canadian TV company SHS, referring to its producer documents, Saudi Arabia has reduced the order for wheeled armored vehicles LAV 700, purchased from the Canadian branch of the corporation General Dynamics Lands Systems (GDLS Canada) in the framework of a huge contract, concluded in February 2014. According to the publication, the contract was changed at the initiative of the Saudi side in the second half of 2016 and now provides for the supply of Saudi Arabia only 742 armored vehicles LAV 700 with the wheel formula 8x8 instead of 928, originally planned (in the message the SAF of the car is not quite accurately called LAV 6).
