    Air Forces Monthly Report

As reported by Air Forces Monthly, July 1st Air Force commander of Iran, Brigadier General Hassan Shah-Safi, said that Iran has successfully completed and self-repair and upgrade its MiG-29 fighters. According to him, the personnel of the Air Force returned to flight status of the MiG-29, damaged and in storage, and is currently "in the Iranian Air Force no MiG-29 in its custody or in a non-flying status." From the standpoint of the British edition is obvious that this statement is untrue, because at least half of Iran's MiG-29A still remain in storage for lack of spare parts needed for their maintenance and repair. A.2 publish a full translation of this material without interest.

As the magazine writes, Gen. Shah-Safi also said that the Iranian Air Force can fully protect the national airspace and that the country has made considerable efforts to produce spare parts needed to upgrade its aircraft. Commander of the 2 tactical air base in Tabriz, where the MiG-29 was undergoing repairs, said that Air Force technicians spent 14,000 man-hours to bring the aircraft in flying condition.

Since 1991, the Iranian Air Force received 18 MiG-29A and seven "sparok" MiG-29UB. They were ordered under the contract concluded with the Soviet Union in June 1990, Iran's MiG-29 became the first and only interceptors purchased by Iran after the Iran-Iraq war, and were intended to replace the F-14A Tomcat, which were lost during the war or were decommissioned due to lack of spare parts. MiGs were ordered as part of a plan to rebuild the Iranian fighter aircraft, the proposed Air Force commander Mansoor Sattar. Originally planned to buy 48 MiG-29 to protect the main Iranian Cities: Shiraz, Tehran and Tabriz, but the order has been reduced due to financial constraints.

MiGami manned 11 and 1 tactical squadrons based in Tehran-Mehrabad airport, and 23 and two tactical squadrons in Tabriz. Under the contract, 400 Russian advisors, technicians and instructors for seven years should have to assist in the exploitation of fighters. From Russia are also required to provide them with spare parts during the entire life cycle - 25 years or 25,000 [as in the original text - AF] flight hours.

However, put the MiG-29 were from the presence of the Russian Air Force, and more than half of them should have exhausted the resources to around 2007-2009. By this time it was known at least two Iranian MiG-29A and four MiG-29UB, deposited due to the exhaustion of the resource. As reported, the aircraft manufacturer could not provide guidance on maintenance and repair, making it impossible for Iranian experts to independently conduct repairs. Nevertheless, the leadership of the Iranian Air Force, efforts were made to acquire the necessary documentation from other countries and are expected by mid-1990. Iran could independently carry out periodic inspections of aircraft by its engineers without the participation of Russian specialists.

Iran also managed to get some equipment for these aircraft from other countries - after Russia, allegedly refused to deliver it. For example, two Iranian MiG-29 were equipped with refueling booms, and from Belarus were obtained by hanging pots volume of 1,520 liters.

As mentioned above, because of the production life of the aircraft were decommissioned. The first MiG-29UB fighters from 23 Squadron was transferred to the storage base in 2006, followed in 2007, followed by a second "Spark" and combat the MiG-29A. In the summer of 2008 the MiG-29UB from 11 Squadron at Mehrabad was also deposited in awaiting repairs, the second MiG-29UB same squadron was decommissioned in spring 2009

As a result, the Iranian Air Force leadership has decided that it is necessary to initiate its own program to repair this type of aircraft and requested the aircraft repair enterprise in Tabriz and Tehran, engaged in servicing the MiG-29 as well as the company Iran Aircraft Industries (IACI) with a proposal to repair the aircraft, which are stored at Mehrabad.

During his visit to Tehran, Putin's October 2007 agreement was worth $ 150 million to supply Iran with 50 turbojet engines RD-33 production of MMPs. Chernyshev. Iran has said that these engines will be used in the project of national development fighter Azarakh. It appears that in fact these engines never planned to use an Iranian fighter plane, which is an example of reverse engineering of the American Northrop F-5E Tiger II. It became apparent that this was nothing more than a cover for their real purpose, which was to replace the life of the engine has reached the Iranian MiG-29. Deliveries began in 2008

As part of the repair of aircraft repair plant in Mehrabad in 2007 assumed responsibility for the repair of the first MiG-29UB 23rd Squadron, who were kept in Tabriz. They were followed by work on two of former Iraqi MiG-29A, which had deposited nearly 18 years after his trip to Iran during the Gulf War in 1991, For this reason they were in very poor condition when they were moved to return to Mehrabad in flight status. In the end, the first independent repair Iranian Mig-29A was completed in September 2008 the destroyer made a successful 30-minute test flight.

In the spring of 2010 at Mehrabad were repaired more MiG-29A, at the same time, the first renovated in Tabriz, the MiG-29UB and returned to duty. Repair of the second MiG-29 in Tabriz was completed in June 2010 This aircraft was damaged in 2001 but it postponed the repair of eight years due to lack of necessary details.

Currently, the company continues IACI repair program Iranian MiG-29 at ARZ in Tabriz and Tehran.

There are unconfirmed reports that Russia may again be ready to assist the repair work carried out by IACI to Mehrabad. Despite the shortage of spare parts, since 2008 the Iranian Air Force was able to return into operation five MiG-29 are stored, and the next five years is planned to increase this number only to the efforts of staff of the Air Force and IACI.

I am surprised that Iran is still keeping the small numbers of the old 9-12's active. I wonder if Russia has decided to not sell anything of any significance to Tehran anymore.

Iran Air Force (IRIAF) | News and Discussions Empty Iran's Shafagh Stealth Aircraft

Post  SinaAzad Sun Jun 05, 2011 5:13 pm

The HESA Shafaq or Shafagh (Shafagh = Twilight) is planned to be Iran's third locally produced aircraft.

Reports have indicated that Shafaq will be a sub-sonic aircraft but this might be improved, and it will have a skin of radar-absorbing material according to Iranian officials.
This two-seat Advanced training and Attack aircraft appears to be based on the Russian-Iranian "Project Integral" and are fitted with Russian ejection seats. Reportedly there are plans to produce three versions—one two-seat trainer/light strike version and two one-seat fighter-bomber versions.
Iran Air Force (IRIAF) | News and Discussions 553
The Shafaq is designed by the Aviation University Complex (AUC), part of the Malek-Ashtar University of Technology (MUT). At the start of the program Iran received help from Russia and the aircraft was known as Integral. Russia later backed away from this project due to several reasons and Iran carried on the project by itself and the aircraft became known as Shafaq. The Shafaq is a sub-sonic aircraft[citation needed], made of radar-absorbing material. It has a large leading edge root extension (LERX) and a root aft of the wing which gives it an unusual circular sub-section.

A 1/7 scale model of the Shafaq has already completed testing in the AUC's wind tunnel and pictures have already been revealed which show that a full-scale model has already been built. The Shafaq will be built in different configurations including a two-seater trainer, a two-seater Light Attack and a one-seater Light Attack variants. Roll-out of the first prototype was scheduled for 2008.
The Shafaq's advanced cockpit features color MFDs and a Russian-made K-36D ejection seat.

Strange shape... they appear to be trying to maximise the lift from the body shape.

The short straight wings actually remind me of the F-104 Starfighter.

The Hangar shots it reminds me of the A-4 Skyhawk.

Interesting concept... I wish them luck.

Maybe hazarding a guess, but that circular "platform" in the center of the plane could be Iran's attempt to also maximize the plane's internal storage.

Look at the profile drawings the circular section is the same thickness as the wing... I doubt it adds much volume at all.

If anything, a giant circular platform in the middle of the plane would increase it's RCS.

Think of it in terms of the cockpit canopy on a helicopter.

A big smooth round bubble canopy is the least stealthy if you consider the effect of direct sunlight on it.

With a big smooth round canopy from a wide range of angles you will see the sun reflected in the canopy.

Change that to flat surfaces and it would only be at certain angles that you will see the sunlight reflected.

Good stealth is flat surfaces to reduce the number of angles energy directed at the surface will reflect directly back to the emitter.

I had learned somewhere that when canards & wings are coincide in level they are lift optimised or otherwise manoeuvrability purpose enhancement; in this case it seems to be the former one.

Good stealth is flat surfaces to reduce the number of angles energy directed at the surface will reflect directly back to the emitter.
not necessarily tangent surfaces; as they are bad at LIFT. spherical shapes too are good to SLIP the oncoming waves downstream away from the radar to increase LO

    There are some design similarities.

    Still interesting.

The Mig design was a paper design... the Iranians are clearly at full sized mockup, if not initial flying prototype stage.

Picture of Iranian Shafagh has being here with us well over 5 years now. Still no confirmation of the first flight. Regarding similarities between Shafagh and I-2000 there has being some speculation about Russian designers helping Iranians about Shafagh.

Russia was a partner until the sanctions. This is a fact. Another thing I heard that it isn't mothballed but the project changed.

There is a law in Iran that prevents Iran from purchasing military equipment. It would have to be a joint venture with a manufacturing facility in Iran that would make the deal work.

I don't think this can happen until ZOGs relationship with Russia degrades further. Not to far to go though.

I didn't say I thought Iran should buy Russian Stealth fighters... I actually meant that Iran should joint develop a new fighter with MiG... some sort of light 5th gen fighter designed to be sophisticated but cheap and simple to operate, capable of very high performance but not so expensive it can't be bought in large numbers.

I think Iran would have plenty to contribute and I think if Iran couldn't produce a large portion of the aircraft itself then there would be something wrong with the design.

it needs to be able to be made in very large numbers... an unmanned version could be used as a drone....

Yes, but they will not buy aircraft. It may not be good but it is the law. They wan't a transfer of technology and that is allot harder to negotiate.

Iran Air Force (IRIAF) | News and Discussions Empty Iranian Phantom jet strikes the Islamic State in Iraq - IHS Jane's 360

Post  ShahryarHedayatiSHBA Tue Dec 02, 2014 4:04 am

An Iranian McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II jet has struck Islamic State targets in the eastern Iraqi province of Diyala, footage shot by regional media shows.

At least one F-4 is seen conducting a bombing run against ground targets in the footage shot by Al Jazeera , which erroneously identified the aircraft as an Iraqi fighter. Iran and Turkey are the only regional operators of the F-4, and the location of the incident not far from the Iranian border, and Turkey's unwillingness to get involved in the conflict militarily, indicate this to be an Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) aircraft.

While the IRIAF is known to have contributed Sukhoi Su-25 'Frogfoot' ground attack aircraft to the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq (ostensibly donated to the Iraqi Air Force, but believed to be crewed by Iranian pilots), this footage is the first visual evidence of direct IRIAF involvement in the conflict.

The Al Jazeera footage, which was shot on 30 November, shows the IRIAF F-4 supporting Iraqi forces retaking the town of Sa'adiya in what was purported to be the government's largest operation against the Islamic State since June. Its release comes weeks after IHS Jane's reported growing evidence of Iranian involvement in the war in Iraq.

Video footage and photographs shown on social media sites have increasingly been showing Iranian military hardware in the hands of Shia militias fighting in Iraq. This hardware includes the 12.7 mm AM-50 anti-materiel rifle, at least one Iranian-made Safir jeep mounted with a 107 mm multiple rocket launcher (MRL), as well as an Iranian 122 mm HM 20 MRL.

    COMMENT
While the US-led effort to combat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has been widely publicised by the Department of Defense (DoD) and its coalition allies, Iran's involvement has been altogether more opaque.

Iran was the first country to pledge and deliver military support to Iraq when the Islamic State began its offensive earlier in the year. At the time that the first IRIAF Su-25s arrived over Baghdad in late June, there was much speculation that Iran and the United States may come together in some form of joint operation against the Islamic State. However, the recent détente between the two countries is still in its very early stages, and neither side much relished the prospect of military co-operation to such a degree.

As such, there appear to be two parallel military campaigns being waged against the Islamic State, with the United States and its allies conducting their air campaign over Iraq and Syria, and Iran pursuing its own military agenda in Iraq at the same time. So far, this dual approach does appear to be working (at least in terms of de-conflicting the two military campaigns), but should they happen to cross paths over the coming weeks and months it would no doubt muddy still further an already complicated conflict.
