Serbia Expects Delivery of Russian T-72s Tanks, Armored Vehicles in 2018

Serbian Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin told Sputnik on Saturday he expects Russia’s military aid package to Serbia consisting, in particular, of 30 T-72s tanks and 30 BRDM-2 armored reconnaissance vehicles, to be delivered next year with no specific deadline fixed.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Serbia expects that the MiG-29 deliveries will happen right on time, the minister noted.

"All administrative things are in order, some more duties we have to fulfill and we will do this of course. The Russian side is very correct, everything they say they deliver and we are very grateful for that of course, so I don’t see any problems in the future, now between friends that kind of problem cannot emerge. We are very grateful to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin for that, that is one of the ways he shows his appreciation and support for Serbia and his personal link to President [Aleksandar] Vucic," Vulin added.

Belgrade will require Russia’s experience in training and military education, as well as support in pilot training upon the completion of Russian deliveries of MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets to Serbia, Vulin told Sputnik.

"There are few of our needs, especially about training and military education- that’s something that we can learn. When we receive MiG-29 [fighter jets], we will need support with training of our new pilots," Vulin said during his official visit to Moscow, asked about future cooperation with Russia and what experience Serbia wanted to acquire from Russian colleagues.

The Serbian minister added that the number of Russian-Serbian joint military exercises for the following year had not been agreed on so far, as it was tied to the country’s budget, as well as the three-year and five-year military cooperation plans, on which the two countries were working on.

"Not yet, I think [the three-year and five-year plans will be ready] by the end of the year. Because it is close with our budget and we will see how it goes. One important thing that you should know about our army – what we say we deliver. So we are very, very cautious when we agree about something – number of military exercises, of education, military training must be fulfilled 100%. So we are very cautious with that, because we speak with our partners in the Russian army and I am sure they are very much satisfied. [Key provisions of the documents] are too early to tell," Vulin explained.

Russia was set to deliver six MiG-29 to Serbia this May. Moscow is set to finalize deliveries of MiG-29 jets to Serbia by the end of 2017.

In November 2016, media reported that Moscow had made a decision to supply Belgrade with six fighter jets. In December, the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) Deputy Director Anatoly Punchuk said that the aircraft could be delivered in spring 2017 as part of a military and technical cooperation assistance program between the two states.

The MiG-29 fighter jets, developed in the Soviet Union in 1980s, are currently used in 29 countries across the world.

The T-72 is a Soviet second-generation main battle tank developed in the early 1970s and widely exported across the globe. This tank is still in service in about 45 states.

The BRDM-2 is an amphibious armored patrol car developed in the early 1960s and it is still operational in at least 38 states.

In Serbia, the first two MiG-29 fighters were delivered from Russia

As reported by the Serbian Ministry of Defense, on October 2, 2017, the first two MiG-29 fighters, transferred from the presence of the Russian Air Force, were delivered aboard the AN-124-100 transport aircraft of the Russian airline Volga-Dnepr on the country.

Note bmpd.Recall that after the Serbian leadership negotiated with the Russian authorities in December 2016, an agreement was reached that the Serbian armed forces in 2017 will receive six MiG-29 fighters, 30 T-72S and 30 BRDM-2, as well as another military property. The most important part of the signed package of contracts are six MiG-29 fighters from the presence of VCS of Russia, previously operated at the Millerovo airbase (31st Fighter Aviation Regiment). Aircraft are a gift of the Russian Defense Ministry to the Serbian Armed Forces. All four single-seat aircraft and two "sparks" were in flight condition, but initially it was planned that Serbia would pay to Russian aircraft repair plants all costs associated with bringing them to export, extending the life, repair and modernization of all six aircraft, as well as the four remaining ones the Serbs MiG-29. The package also includes the delivery of a large number of spare parts, additional equipment and weapons, sufficient for the operation of aircraft for three to five years. This is a sharp contrast to the current practice of the Ministry of Defense of Serbia to acquire components for the operation "here and now." However, in 2017 plans have changed, and modernization of these aircraft will be carried out in Serbia at the Moma Stanoilovich Aircraft Repair Plant in Batajnica, but with the technical assistance of Russian specialists.

   Ultimately, after a long break, Serbia will have seven functioning single-seat MiG-29 fighters and three "MiG-29UB" fighters, which will allow us to conduct a normal process of combat training, which is now virtually impossible due to the fact that the Air Force and air defense there are only two serviceable MiG-29Bs, one MiG-29UB and one MiG-21UM, which are mainly used for patrolling.

Now to be serious for a moment - no way that Serbia has the money to pay for these complexes; meaning it's getting them for free or it's got a long-term loan from Russia for the purpose of buying equipment from it.

Now nothing wrong with a loan - but loans are what Russia gives to neutral countries such as Sri Lanka or Indonesia.

Serbia should stop trying to sit on two chairs, cancel its EU membership aspirations and flirtations with NATO, and apply to join the CSTO, EEU, and Shanghai Cooperation organization; as well as BRICS alternatives to the World Bank and other Western instruments of influence; although nothing wrong with being part of the Western ones at the same time either.

Then we can talk about giving phased-out Russian equipment such as S-300Ps to Serbia as is given to Belarus and Kazakhstan, discounted gas prices, internal prices for Russian military equipment, long-term loans for purchasing Russian industrial or military technology, etc...

All respect to our Serbia bros but anything else is just silly.

As reservist of Serbian Air Defence i am divided internally.

S-300PMU2 in mid 2020s isnt all that... impressive to say at least. But its good start to replace those ancient Nevas, as that is what it will surely replace.

I would be however alot happier if both Neva and Kubs (my service post) got replaced by new Buks rather than S-300. But oh well.

Chances of us canceling EU membership application is out of the question that wont happen, even majority of pupulation would vote for it.

CSTO is sort of useless for us as we are not bordering with it... and guess what, Russia doesnt have carrier to project power coz they do not need it so apparently... Romania and Bulgaria already once cock-blocked Russia due to two phone calls. And such alliance is not worth anything.

We pay gas more than Germany does at this point, would be nice if we had prices like they do, no need for discounts.

Pantsir with those new missiles they are talking (35km range and the other one with 100km range) are a better option. And upgrade what serbia already has. Specially p-18 radars. Bielorussia offers a very nice upgrade for them.

Air defences today should be specialized in shoting down cruise missiles. If they can do that they can also shot fighters. The opposite is not always true.

I'm not conviced by buk to be honest. It didn't work well in syria. Israrli probaly already have countermeasure against export model syria operate so NATO also has it.

And s-300 are expensive and they will get a small number of missiles which is totally useless. Moreover it is a stationary big complexe that US would love to destroy so they would help any servian enemy in case of war just to make bad publicity to russian systems.

We already modernised two P-12s i believe in INFIZ. In general modernisation of existing radars is ongoing however we lack newer radars, modernisation can do only as much.

Buk is what we need, majority of the treats we would face is in that medium range, Pancir or something of a sort should be second place on the list as we are currently relying on few Strelas and Iglas for SHORAD.

Well, pantsir is a medium range system with the new missiles. The price is also low, missiles are very cheap and maintenance is also very low.

Radars can be bought separately. No need to buy buks for them. And the radar of the Buk system are not the best russia has. S-300PMU2 would give you a much better detection capability.

Serbia can buy used Buk-M1-2 from Russia or earlier Buk from the Ukraine. It'll cost peanuts, Finland and Cyprus operate them and both are in EU.

Pantsir can't reach high enough to guarantee destruction of targets, all enemy has to do is to fly at higher altitudes and they would be safe just like last time

And like I said, S-300 is too large and clumsy for area this small, it would be sitting duck and one massive weak spot

Main threats today are stand off weapons not launchers who are always out of range. Pantsirs are better for that. They have a max altitude of 15km which enough to hit anything. Bielorussia already has said they will supply some buk to serbia.

Radars of s-300 are very good for detection and they are mobile, no need for the expensive missiles.

Some buk to cover the territory but I would mainly order pantsir.

Hello all,

Haven't posted in a while (life and all), but i found this today, delivery of four Mi-35M has taken place. Is this in Russia or Serbia, and are they new or from VKS stocks? Anything recent about delivery of new AD systems, S-300, Buk, Tunguska etc.?

I've heard they're negotiating about upgraded Buk-M1's (with elements from Buk-M2) and upgraded Tunguska's which would be equipped with the same missiles as the Pantsir-S1

Given the fact that Serbia entered EAEU VAT is most likely excluded from the contract

Also when taken into view only last few years in the time frame Serbia accumulated quite nice arsenal from Russia somewhat from donations somewhat it bought but also ability

BELGRADE, November 1. /TASS/. The Serbian government is considering the purchase of Russian missile defense systems S-400 through obtaining a long-term loan, the Vecherne Novosti daily informed on Friday, citing its own sources.

"Serbia’s military and state leadership was impressed by the efficiency of the S-400 system [during the recent drills "Slavic Shield-2019" with the participation of the Russian military]. In the coming months, they might hold talks with Moscow on acquiring a long-term loan for the purchase this missile defense system," the newspaper wrote.

The daily reminded that a group of Serbian military officers had wrapped up joint drills with Russia using S-400 surface-to-air missile systems.

The Slavic Shield-2019 Russian-Serbian drills were held for the first time and consisted of two stages. The first stage took place in September at the Russian Aerospace Force’s combat training center in the southern Astrakhan Region. The second stage involved the teams of an S-400 air defense system and Pantsyr-S anti-aircraft missile/gun launchers of Russia’s Aerospace Force, and also Neva-M1T and Kub-M surface-to-air missile systems of Serbia’s Air Force and Air Defense Forces.

The Slavic Shield-2019 exercise practiced the issues of inter-operability of air defense troops from both countries.

Russia’s S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) is the latest long-and medium-range surface-to-air missile system that went into service in 2007. It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, and can also be used against ground installations. The S-400 can engage targets at a distance of up to 400 km and at an altitude of up to 30 km under intensive enemy fire and jamming.
