    Topol launch from Kapustin Yar

Purpose of the launch was "to test new combat payload for future ICBMs." The warhead was said to have successfully reached its target at the Sary-Shagan test range.

Strategic Topol-M missile successfully hits conditional target in Kamchatka

The Russian Strategic Missile Forces jointly with the Aerospace Forces successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic silo-based Topol-M missile from Plesetsk cosmodrome, the press service of the Russian defense ministry said.

"The exercise warhead hit the conditional target with high precision at the range in Kamchatka Peninsula. The launch confirmed the sustainability of flight and technical characteristics of the missiles of that type," it said.

The three-stage hard-fuel silo-based Topol-M missile as well as its mobile option was designed by the Moscow Institute of Heat Technologies. Tests began in 1994 and the silo-based missile became operational in 2000. The firing range is 11 thousand kilometers and the takeoff weight is 46.5 tons. Payload is 1.2 tons. The missile is armed with one warhead.

Kamchatka? Then I'm sure that they hit the Kura test range.

Rumors says it is s300 but the explosion looks huge and could be a ICBM, probably topol.

Officials state it was S-350 test. Some speculate Topol with an experimental warhead.

Answer? Dunno. I go with official statement as it has more backing than speculations.

    russianforces.org also same report

This video that appeared online on December 10, 2018 shows an apparent failure of a missile launched from the Kapustin Yar test site. By the size of the fireball it seemed like a large missile, probably an ICBM. And indeed, the next day LiveJournal user e_maksimov (of the Burevestnik launch site at Novaya Zemlya fame) presented good evidence that it was a launch from the launch complex No. 107 of the Kapustin Yar test site. This made him to conclude that it was a failed launch of a Topol-E missile - a Topol ICBM modified to test payloads in launches from Kapustin Yar to Sary-Shagan. Later, the same user found a NOTAM notice that supported his Topol-E hypothesis.

It all looks quite convincing to me, so the event should probably be counted as a Topol-E failure. These kind of launches (but not failures) have been, in fact, fairly common. The most recent one was about a year ago, in December 2017.

a site most notorious for made up nonsense.  Just another theory.

But it is possible. I mean, some are stating the firefighter states something about fire or expulsion from area of warhead. So experimental warhead may have failed or some kind of aborted function, who knows.

Potpig's site right? Yeah it's definitely a large collection of shoveled horse pile, hardly a reliable source.

Link ? I saw on sputnik yesterday that there was no official statement.

The explosion seems to be from the fuel. Missile keeps going. It's rather huge for a s-350 missile.

That's definitely no S-350 or S-300, the blast on its eventual impact was way too big.  Judging by vid there were clear indications of failing & burning solid fuel from a specific point in the trajectory while the rocket continued on its course...  looks like the 1st stage containment vessel suffered a partial rupture on ascent and spilled fuel?

Topol ICBMs to come out of service in Russia in 2024

It is planned that some of Topol ICBMs coming out of service will be used for civilian purposes as Start-1 carrier rockets
