I rather doubt the west would consider Russia mediating under any other terms.

The west has commited itself to the opposition and it simply can't risk Gaddafi retaining power in any form.

They are banking on the greed of the new power structure so they can roll in and get all the good deals and pinch all the mineral and material wealth of Libya before the Libyans realise Gaddafi wasn't actually as bad as the nut jobs that will replace him.

NATO jets target Libyan military barracks

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — British jets hit a military barracks in the Libyan capital early Sunday, intensifying NATO pressure on Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi nearly four months into an uprising to end his erratic 42-year rule ....

I wonder when this civil war is going to end ! Without Ammo and Weapon (Barracks , airport and ...) Gadhafi will not remain in power for a long time ...

Don't know about you, but if foreign powers were bombing my country in support of any faction... let alone a weak one unable to take power on its own, I would tend to want to fight for whoever is in power.

If "the people" can't get power without violence then what sort of people are they?

I find it amusing that NATO is prattling on about defending innocent unarmed civilians while supporting a rebel group that uses UV-32-57 rocket pods strapped on to the back of vehicles. They might as well be closing their eyes when firing them because accuracy and sighting wise they will have no idea where those rockets land and who they are killing. For all they know they might be landing short and hitting their own men, or landing amongst the civilians NATO is supposed to be protecting.

Personally I hope this drags on forever... the Libyan people are screwed anyway, and NATO never learns anything from its violent and bloody actions abroad, but the longer it goes the more money it will cost the west and in the end that is what is really going to hurt them.

They can butcher Gaddafis kids and grand children, but at the end of the day they don't care about any people in the region... it is the potential wealth of the country opened up for exploitation that they are interested in. Clearly murdering three of Gaddafis grandkids is an enormous step towards saving the innocent Libyans... those poor ba$tards have had to suffer 40 years of free health and free education... I am sure the CIA puppet that replaces him will care much more for the people of Libya. Rolling Eyes

Saudi Arabia unplugged it's currency from the US dollar...said they weren't accepting US dollars for oil.

The West is just annihilating all military assets in the region...country...by country. Eventually will get to the Saud's and will have Europe and Russia joining the tag team.

Split the oil 3 ways. Neither really has money. White's are scared they are becoming a minority in the world and eventually India/China will have to get its population trimmed.

Not even China will be able to put up a real fight. They'll be starved a good while before the shooting begins.

You are quite right, many whites do think in those terms and much of the really wealthy people of the world are those sorts of people.

I very much think any attempt to reduce the numbers of ethnic Chinese and/or ethnic Indians will result in a significant reduction in the numbers of those aggressors that try their hand at doing something.

How will China be starved? They have plenty of cash money to buy the things they need... they have been buying farms and property all over the world, and China is too important to the worlds economy now to impose effective sanctions on them.

Plan will likely call for the Philippines being one of the proxy countries to deplete/distract the Chinese.

Typhoons will be steered to have direct landfall on China, effecting crop production/commerce.

There is a Treaty between the US and Russia not to use weather as a military tool...no Treaty with China.

Iran filed a protest against the United States for bombing alllll the chemical weapons bunkers in Iraq. Chemical Weapons Convention called for ALL chemical weapons to be SAFELY destroyed. Why did the US bomb Iraq's chemical weapon bunkers?

Were they supplied by the US and the US would have to bear the costs of safely disposing of all of that?

Who supplied Libya with Chemical Weapons? Is this the real reason Libya is being bombed? Somebody doesn't want to bear the cost of safely getting rid of all of those chemical weapons?......maybe countries are trying to destabilize Libya to the point those chemical weapons will get broken out and used?

Gaddafi clearly can't secure his chemical weapons bunkers since NATO destabilized his country....hmmmm...did NATO provide those chemical weapons to Libya back in the day?

Find that out and you'll understand WHY there's a war in Libya.

Why is the US stating to the Chemical Weapons Convention it will not comply with the Treaty and destroy it's chemical weapons stockpile by April 2012?.......2012 will be an interesting year indeed.

Libya: Royal Navy warship HMS Liverpool comes under heavy fire

HMS Liverpool, a Royal Navy warship, came under heavy rocket fire from a shore battery as it patrolled off the Libyan coast, the Ministry of Defence said.

A missile launcher is said to have sent a number of rockets towards Liverpool that has been stationed off Libya for several weeks.

The Type 42 destroyer returned heavy naval gunfire answering Col Gaddafi's forces with its 4.5in main gun sending several shells arching into the night during the early hours of Wednesday.

The attack came after Liverpool fired a barrage of illumination rounds in support of an air attack on the regime stronghold of Zlitan.

No casualties were suffered by the ship's crew during the exchange and the MoD were unable to confirm if the battery was destroyed during the duel.

The attack came after the helicopter carrier Ocean launched her Apache attack helicopters against a hotel in Zlitan that was being used as a military base.

HMS Bangor continues work off Libya

    31 Aug 11

Royal Navy minehunter HMS Bangor has been stationed off the coast of Libya for the last two months, ensuring that vital humanitarian aid reaches the Libyan people.

The Royal Navy ship left its home port in Scotland on 6 June this year, heading to the Mediterranean to support NATO forces off the coast of Libya.

Since reaching Libya the Sandown Class mine countermeasures vessel, operating just yards from land and under constant threat from artillery fire from troops loyal to Colonel Gaddafi, has conducted six different operations in the region.

Petty Officer (Mine Warfare) Steve Moss is one of two minehunting directors on the vessel, conducting defence watches and operating the Seafox mine disposal system. He also acts as the operations room supervisor:

"We spend so long training for times like these that it is fantastic to get a chance to do our jobs in a real, high threat environment," said PO(MW) Moss.

"Uncertainty is always just around the corner, but our job, clearing the way so that humanitarian aid can reach civilians caught up in the conflict, makes me feel that I am really making a difference."

Manning their posts in heat of over 35 degrees Celsius for six hours at a time, the sailors on board Bangor have to remain constantly vigilant for incoming threats. It is a task that takes incredible strength of character:

"The body armour and helmets are very heavy and the stress this causes in the extreme heat is unbelievable," said Able Seaman (Diver) James Oakley.

Able Seaman (Diver) Oakley is a trained mine clearance diver and also plays his part in protecting the ship by operating some of the vessel's upper deck weapons such as miniguns and general purpose machine guns:

"It feels awesome to play such an integral part in the ship's safety," he said. "We do our best to maintain 360-degree cover at all times - it's satisfying to know that you're playing your part in helping to keep your shipmates safe.

"I have been manning the ship's weapons while we were minehunting just yards from Misurata Port.

"It's a good feeling, knowing that I am making a real difference to the civilians in Libya."

When not engaged in checking the routes into Misurata for mines, the ship is further out to sea conducting patrols and monitoring the maritime traffic in the area.

Each vessel must be identified and questioned to ensure that there are no breaches of the arms embargo that is in force. Shipping in the area ranges from small fishing vessels to large merchant ships carrying humanitarian aid. All of them must be checked by HMS Bangor.

With the nearest land support over 200 nautical miles (370km) away, HMS Bangor must rely on some of her sister ships in the Royal Navy for support.

In the two months since joining Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR, Bangor has taken on stores and fuel from HMS Ocean twice and been replenished at sea by Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel Orangeleaf. There have also been two helicopter transfers during that time.

RAF destroys Gaddafi Scud missile launchers

    31 Aug 11
    In-Depth Coverage

RAF aircraft put several military targets out of the reach of pro-Gaddafi forces in Libya yesterday, including Scud missile launchers and a military command and control site.

Early on Tuesday morning, 30 August 2011, RAF Tornado and Typhoon aircraft used Paveway bombs to destroy a military command and control site which NATO surveillance had successfully identified near Bani Walid.

During the afternoon, an armed reconnaissance patrol over Hun was tasked by NATO to attack a mobile radar system which had been located in the area; the vehicle was destroyed.

Further patrols continued at Bani Walid, in the course of which our aircraft spotted three heavily camouflaged Scud missile launchers deployed just to the east of the town, well within potential range of all the coastal cities from Tripoli to Misurata. Paveway guided bombs destroyed all three.

While HMS Liverpool remains on patrol off Tripoli, protecting humanitarian shipping movements into the port, HMS Ocean is undergoing a short period of planned maintenance. This has been co-ordinated with NATO and operations are not affected.

RAF and Navy take further action against pro-Gaddafi forces

    2 Sep 11

The Royal Navy and RAF took further action yesterday against pro-Gaddafi forces in Libya under NATO's Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR to enforce UN Security Council Resolution 1973.

In the early hours of yesterday morning, a precision strike over the area surrounding Bani Walid, where RAF aircraft were conducting armed reconnaissance patrols, destroyed a military command and control installation.

A couple of hours later, RAF aircraft identified a pick-up truck armed with a large rocket pod. A Brimstone missile destroyed the vehicle, with numerous secondary explosions from the rockets.

In the afternoon, Tornado GR4s conducted a strike on six buildings in use by former regime forces near Bani Walid, at Qaryat al Mirqib. All six targets were destroyed by Paveway guided bombs.

Overnight, HMS Liverpool again fired star shells over pro-Gaddafi military positions at Sirte to demonstrate to those forces which persist in prolonging the conflict that their positions are well-known and capable of being targeted.

Meanwhile, yesterday, UK Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy co-chaired an international conference on Libya in Paris.

The meeting was an opportunity to help the National Transitional Council on the path to establishing a free, democratic and inclusive Libya. Over 60 countries attended the meeting along with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Leaders at the conference agreed to continue with NATO operations, bring those guilty of war crimes to justice and support the National Transitional Council (NTC) in its efforts to achieve political transition. It was also unanimously agreed that frozen Libyan assets should be handed over to the NTC.

Speaking following the meeting, Mr Cameron said that although 'enormous difficulties' lay ahead the Libyans were showing the world their courage, spirit and resilience.

He added that the NATO operation in Libya would continue for 'as long as we are needed to protect civilian life'.

Mr Cameron also said that lessons had been learnt from Iraq and past conflicts and this was reflected in the fact that there have not been occupying armies or invading forces.

    Libya's dead.

Who do you think will be next?

It's got to be Iran. Stop China's fuel sources...Appease Israel. China wouldn't DARE attack Israel in a counter strike. Israel would sink the Shi Lang.

The irony of the EU putting oil sanctions on Syria has led China to say to Syria that they will buy any oil the EU refuses to buy.

Of course once Gaddafi is gone and the EU turns up wanting to pump oil I wonder how unified the opposition forces will be.

Look at WWII... the US, UK, France, China, the Soviet Union all found things in common... namely a war against the Germans and Japanese. When the war ended however they found they had much less in common and things started to fall to pieces because apart from wanting to fight germany and japan they had little else in common.

Might end up the same in Libya... add into the mix a few outside influences and there could be turmoil there for a decade, and little oil being pumped for the EU... wonder where they will turn?

We are not children Vlad... whether Gaddafi sent people to China or not there would be some evidence found by some EU media outlet with evidence to prove that the new Libyan government should do all its trade with the EU countries that helped it out.

If they can engineer a regime change in Syria expect the same there too.

Notice that the Chinese didn't deny that Gaddafi officials met there to buy weapons. They only say they didn't sell them and that they didnt' have knowledge they were there which is total bunk. You don't meet state arms company heads without CCP approval. That part certainly wasn't engineered. Who knows of Gaddafi actually got weapons, the fact China allowed them to even offer to discuss it enough to end any NTC interest with China.

Well they said that Gaddafis envoys met people in charge of factories rather than the government officials that could actually approve of any real transaction.

Gaddafi isn't a fool, if he sent people to meet with the people who ran the factories rather than through proper government channels this was going to be unofficial sales of a less than legal nature.

The Chinese government would realise this, which is why they didn't say anything till the west made allegations about Chinese sales to Gaddafi.

Very much similar to how the US uses the CIA to do things most Americans probably wouldn't approve of, but that have to be done anyway.

The US government knows it is being done and could stop it, but because it will ultimately benefit if it succeeds then it turns a blind eye, and if they are caught... well it wasn't the US government that approved or did anything.

You can of course bet that if there was no evidence that the EU countries would have made some stuff up anyway... am looking forward to reading about rogue Russian elements supplying snipers to Gaddafis forces to discredit Russia so only the EU countries will get contracts.

I notice on RT that the rebel forces are already holding Ukrainian engineers claiming they are snipers...

Western media have such tiny budgets when it comes to finding and following a story most just repeat media material published by the US state department, so there will not be any investigation, but fabricating a story is cheap.

Senior Libyan Officials Say Gadhafi Killed in Sirte

    October 20, 2011

    Elizabeth Arrott | Cairo

Celebrations are underway across Libya, where officials of the interim government say the country's former leader Moammar Gadhafi has been killed.

The news came as fighters loyal to the National Transitional Council took control of Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte, the last major stronghold of the old government.

The reports from Libyan provisional government officials that Moammar Gadhafi had been killed during a battle for control of Sirte prompted celebrations in other towns and cities across the North African country where Gadhafi ruled for four decades.

The end of Gadhafi's two months on the run mark a turning point in the NTC's efforts to consolidate its control of the country.

The reports about Gadhafi came shortly after NTC fighters raised the new Libyan flag in the center of Sirte Thursday morning. Celebratory gunfire and car horns replaced the sniper fire and heavy weaponry that had sounded through the city for weeks, noise that only grew louder as word of Gadhafi's fate spread.

The capture of Sirte comes near two months after forces loyal to the NTC took control of the capital Tripoli, forcing Gadhafi and his family to flee.

His whereabouts since had been the source of intense speculation, with the possibilities including underground bunkers or refuge in another country.

The declaration of victory in Sirte is expected to set in motion a series of political moves leading to elections, a new government and a new constitution - a massive undertaking in a country that has had 40 years of arbitrary, one-man rule.

The capture of Sirte follows NTC success in another pro-Gadhafi bastion, Bani Walid, earlier this week. Fighting still continues in southern areas of the country, the vast desert regions bordering Niger, Algeria and Chad. But control of Gadhafi's hometown provides a geographic as well as symbolic victory, uniting the main population corridor along the coast from east to west.

Gadhafi forces are in a struggle for survival says Libya scholar Ziad Akl from the Ahram Center in Cairo.

"The forces that are pro-Gadhafi, first of all, they are not politically organized, they are not strategically outlined, and they are not fighting actually to gain ground," said Akl. "They are simply trying to defend the positions they have and stop the revolution from moving on and this is a time- constrained battle."

A major portion of that battle ended Thursday.

    Catch Gaddafi?

It is pretty clear that was never part of the plan.

It is amusing that his execution in captivity has been largely ignored in the west... how wonderful it is to have the ability to ignore ones own morals... one of the many advantages of proxy wars...

They probably killed thousands of people and destroyed much of what was probably the most civilised country on that continent... the oil wealth certainly benefited Gaddafi and his cohorts but it also benefited the Libyan people with free education and healthcare and good infrastructure.

I am sure when things turn sour and the people rise again in 2-5 years because the new regime is no better or even worse than the regime they just threw out that the west will blame the Libyan people for not being ready for democracy... or they will blame muslims.
